what you should know
Emergent is the pioneering student organization that highlights the technical, ethical and commercial aspects of data science problems.
There’s a shortage of professionals who master an advanced set of skills in Data Science, but an increasing demand of these skills. With Emergent Leuven, we solve this problem in 3 ways:
Develop transdisciplinary analytical skills (data science + communication + strategy) through participation in workshops and educational tracks, as well as organisational skills through organisation of activities.
Apply skills at challenges and consultancy tracks.
Transfer mastered skills by teaching a workshop, or coaching during challenges or consultancy tracks.
We do this in close collaboration with industry and academia to bring students, researchers and professionals closer together.
The birth of EMERGENT dates back to the second semester of 2014-2015, when Bruno Coussement and Thomas Devenyns where on Erasmus exchange in Zürich. The following realisation struck them:
After completing an university degree today, you may call yourself knowledgable of your field. This enables you to solve problems defined in that frame of reference. Unfortunately, real life doesn’t work that way. Many situations today require a joint effort between multiple disciplines. This realisation was the main driver which led to the creation of EMERGENT Leuven.
A motivated team was gathered, and the first events were successfully organised during 2015-2016. The flagship event was, and still is, the Data 4 Good Challenge, a full day filled with workshops focused on data science, strategy and pitching followed by a challenge based on current social responsibility trends. This event attracts up to 180 high potential students ready to compete and learn from each other. Combining insights is the key to win and go home with our awesome prizes.
After a brief break in 2019 due to a lack of board members, Emergent was relaunched in 2020 as the pioneering Data Science organisation for students, by students.
